X Observatory

Located along a highway at the edge of the city of Goes, the project responds to a prominent dyke that serves as a critical water barrier for the city. Commissioned as a public observatory, the design begins with a simple gesture: to utilize the existing elevation of the dyke as a spatial and conceptual foundation.
The observatory is composed of two cross-laminated timber (CLT) planks, angled and cantilevered in opposite directions, forming an X-shaped structure that emerges from the slope of the dyke. These planks are not perfectly aligned, leaving deliberate gaps that allow a meandering S-shaped circulation path through the structure. This deviation between the planks creates moments of pause, movement, and visual tension.
Due to the cantilevered nature of the structure, a series of shoelace-like tension cables are employed to counterbalance the planks, turning structural necessity into a design feature. The resulting composition not only echoes the linearity of the dyke and surrounding infrastructure but also offers a dynamic spatial experience—both sculptural and functional.
